The minimum focus distance is 1.4m, with a maximum magnification of 0.13x, which is a step back from the 1m minimum focus and 0.28x magnification of the most recent 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II. All this is topped-off by a price which, while substantially higher than the older lens, is still substantially lower than its Nikon and Canon
Tamron makes a 70-200 f2.8, model number a001. It goes for about $770 new. You can pick it up for around $570 or so used on KEH. The lens is pretty good optically but it's not a really high performer when it comes to autofocus speed. I always had pretty good luck with it taking sports pics with it as long is the action kept then lens closer to
At MFD Tamron acts as 135mm comparatively measuring. The maximum magnification ratio is 1:6.1 The farther you focus the more it magnifies. So at 30 feet it might be 180mm and at infinity it might be 200mm. Sigma at MFD is more like 180mm or longer and it has 1:4.8 ratio.
Hi again folks. So I'm hunting for a 70-200mm f2.8 lens. I'm shopping value for dollar here. For example, the new FL from Nikon is completely not cost effective (prices over $3600 in Canada). The Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR1 is price competitive with the Sigma OS 2.8, and the new Tamron.
Reports suggest that an accurately tuned Sport 70-200 f/2.8 is closer in optical quality to the FLE than it is to the VRII. As someone who has owned all of the Nikon AF80-200s through the new 70-200 f/2.8S, I can tell you that the 70-200FLE is a definite upgrade on the prior versions.
